Architecture Day 2021 in Villa Tugendhat

Garden architect Přemysl Krejčiřík will present the processes and technologies that led to the original appearance of the garden of this UNESCO monument. The Villa Tugendhat garden not only forms the unique natural framework of the house, it is also connected to the building in terms of architectural interior and exterior links to form a unique complex, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lighting design specialist Vladimír Burian will reveal the history of artificial lighting up to the current trends in the context of the villa. Vladimír Burian (together with the lighting design studio at the JAMU Theatre Faculty) is also the author of the fourth exhibition in this year’s exhibition series Possibilities of Space Interpretation in of Villa Tugendhat, titled INTERPRETATION 4: GARDEN ILLUMINATION.

A lecture by the conservationist Roman Zámečník on the garden architecture of interwar Czechoslovakia with a focus on the villa colony above the Lužánky park. The typical manifestations of the ‘First Republic garden architecture will be presented using concrete examples of the most productive studios of Josef Vaněk or Josef Kumpán, who set the direction of the mainstream.

In cooperation with the Josef Arnold Cultural Centre, a walk through the Černá Pole district has been planned, complementing the above-mentioned lectures with the overall context of the villa colony and the Arnold Villa. With a guide from the Josef Arnold Cultural Centre, we will walk along the route past several important architectural sites – the Arnold Villa or Villa Tugendhat. Brno Černá Pole represents the first ever villa colony on our territory, started in the 1860’s by the architect Josef Arnold.
