Villa Tugendhat
A house on the edge of history
The same title as the lecture is also featured on a monograph dedicated to this project by architect Jan Sapák. The Villa Tugendhat in Brno is his lifelong theme – Jan Sapák has been focusing on the history and destiny of this house since his studies. He considers the Villa Tugendhat one of the groundbreaking works of cultural history, which he says has influenced and still influences architecture and its creators worldwide. He has been publishing and lecturing on the topic of the Villa Tugendhat at home and abroad for many years.
Jan Sapák is an architect, architectural theorist and publicist. He studied at the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1984 he joined the practice in the SIAL Studio in Liberec with Miroslav Masák and Karel Hubáček. Later he collaborated in Brno with architects Jindřich Škrabal and Ludvík Grym. He apprenticed as a stonemason and also owned a stone-cutting firm.
