18th May 1944: Born in Ulm-Söflingen (Germany), son of a family of artists and conservators / restorers.

From 1962: Practice as a restorer in the studio of my father Walter Hammer. Courses in the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (professors: Straub, Denninger).

From 1966: Studied art history, philosophy and classical and Christian Archaeology in Freiburg / Breisgau (professors including Bauch, Sauerländer, Schuchart, Zanker and Kollwitz) and from 1969 in Vienna (Pächt, Demus, G. Schmidt).

1975: Promotion to Dr. phil. with the dissertation:  Typologie und frühbürgerlicher Realismus. Die Biblia Pauperum Weigel Felix, NY, Pierpont Morgan Library Ms. 230 (Typology and early bourgeois realism. The Biblia Pauperum Weige Felix, New York / USA, Pierpont Morgan Library Ms. 230)

1971-75: Freelance conservator in the conservation workshops of the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments in Vienna.

1976-97: Head of conservation of wall painting / Architecture surface of the conservation workshops of the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments. Areas: theory and practice of conservation of wall paintings in situ, murals and, generally, historical architectural surface.

1985-1997: University lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna (preservation of historical architectural surface).

1987-1997: University lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (material technology).

1997-2008: Professor at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Fachhochschule Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen: Preservation and conservation of wall painting / architectural surface. Focus: Study and documentation of materials and surfaces, survey on building physics and material-scientific research, architectural surface (medieval and Modernism), Nanolime, cleaning with a plasma jet, salt reduction, mineral consolidation and fixation, lime technology.

Since 2005: Coordinator of the international group of universities (Brno VUT, Vienna, Applied, Pardubice-Litomyšl, Hildesheim HAWK, Cologne CICS, Bratislava SAW) for the study of materials and finishes of the Tugendhat House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Brno (1928 – 30, since 2001 World Heritage by UNESCO).

2006: Concept and coordination of the international conference on Materiality (Modern Movement Architecture Surfaces) in Brno, 26th-29th April 2006.

2008: Since 1.3. retired 13/1/2010: appointment as Chairman of the International Expert Committee for the Supervision of the implementation of preservation and restoration of the Tugendhat House in Brno.

Memberships: ICOM, ICOMOS, VdR, ÖRV, Docomomo international (ISC) and Docomomo Germany (WG Technology).
