POSSIBILITIES OF INSPIRATION THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

May 2022 – February 2023

Last year, Villa Tugendhat introduced a new format of exhibition projects in its exhibition space.

This was the POSSIBILITIES OF SPACE INTERPRETATION series, which was to offer a view of the iconic space of the villa from unusual perspectives in the form of seven research and exhibition projects. The so-called free-flowing space has been described by theorists many times, so the intention of the cycle was to start surveying previously unexplored points of view, using approaches of contemporary art – performance, deep listening, authentic movement, light design, sonification or generative design.

The presentation of contemporary approaches and new interpretations in the context of the world-famous UNESCO monument and its timeless space proved to be very interesting, which is why the Villa Tugendhat Study and Documentation Centre decided to continue with it.

This year, we will move away from exploring a specific space towards the principles of architecture in general. How can free art reflect architecture? Led by four international artists, we will move from the latest tools of contemporary art to more traditional artistic media and present several approaches to reflecting architecture in the exhibition series POSSIBILITIES OF INSPIRATION THROUGH ARCHITECTURE.

How do the exhibitions incorporate explorations of architectural lines and surfaces, the material history of a place, the problem of gentrification, or the influence of architecture and public space on people?
